From V1 to V2: The Mindfries Journey Is Just Getting Started

We started Mindfries with a simple question: how can we evaluate what engineers can actually do? After building V1 and testing it with early users, we're taking the next step toward something more ambitious.

From V1 to V2: The Mindfries Journey Is Just Getting Started

Every product starts with a question.

Ours was simple:

What if we could evaluate engineers based on what they can actually do, rather than just how well they perform in interviews?

That question became the starting point for Mindfries.

What began as an idea has grown into a working product, early user testing, and a new chapter we're incredibly excited about.

We've built V1. We've put it in front of people. We've learned from the experience.

And now, we're moving toward V2—with a bigger vision for what engineering assessment can become.

Here's our story so far.

The idea behind Mindfries

Traditional technical interviews can tell us useful things about a candidate. But they don't always capture the full picture of how someone works as an engineer.

Real engineering involves more than answering questions.

It means exploring unfamiliar codebases, debugging unexpected issues, investigating systems, testing assumptions, and making decisions when the answer isn't obvious.

We started thinking about a different approach: could we build an AI interviewer that focuses more on practical engineering ability?

Could we help hiring teams understand how candidates approach real problems, instead of relying only on resumes and conventional interview performance?

That became the foundation of Mindfries.

Building V1: Turning an idea into a product

Ideas are easy to talk about. Building something people can actually use is a different challenge.

Our team came together to turn the concept into a working product.

We made decisions, built features, worked through technical challenges, and kept moving toward one goal: bringing our vision of practical engineering assessment to life.

Eventually, V1 was ready.

It wasn't the end of the journey. It was the first opportunity to put our thinking into practice and see how people interacted with what we'd built.

For us, that was a significant milestone.

We had moved beyond discussing what engineering assessment could look like. We had something real to test.

Putting V1 in front of real users

Once V1 was ready, we started testing it with a small group of people.

This was an important step.

Building a product based on assumptions is one thing. Watching people use it, listening to their reactions, and identifying what needs improvement is another.

Early testing gave us an opportunity to examine our initial approach, discover areas worth improving, and think more carefully about what the next version should deliver.

We don't see V1 as a finished answer to the challenges of technical hiring.

We see it as the foundation on which we can build something better.

Because a product becomes more valuable when its creators keep learning.

Why we're moving to V2

V1 helped us take the first step. V2 is an opportunity to take a bigger one.

We're using what we've learned to rethink how Mindfries should work, what the experience should feel like, and how we can make the platform more useful to both candidates and hiring teams.

Our ambition goes beyond creating another tool that asks technical questions.

We want to build a more practical approach to understanding engineering ability.

That means thinking carefully about the challenges candidates face, the evidence hiring teams need, and the different ways engineering skills show up in real work.

V2 isn't just about building more features. It's about building toward a bigger vision.

Engineering talent doesn't fit into one template

One of the things that excites us most about this space is the diversity of modern engineering roles.

Consider a few examples.

A Forward Deployed Engineer may need to solve customer problems, integrate systems, and build solutions in unfamiliar environments.

A reverse engineer may need to investigate software behavior and understand systems without complete documentation.

An AI engineer may need to integrate models, evaluate outputs, and debug complex workflows.

A researcher may need to explore uncertain problems and test new ideas.

These roles have different requirements. A single generic interview format may not reveal all the capabilities that matter.

As Mindfries evolves, we want to explore how practical, role-relevant assessments can help companies evaluate a wider range of engineering talent.

This is an important part of the future we're working toward.

Building for candidates and hiring teams

Mindfries isn't just about helping companies assess candidates. We also want engineers to have opportunities to explore and demonstrate their skills.

That's why the candidate experience matters.

Through our Practice section, candidates can explore the platform and experience a different approach to engineering challenges.

For hiring teams, our goal is to make technical assessment more practical and provide useful evidence to support hiring decisions.

Both sides matter.

A better hiring process should help companies understand candidates while giving candidates a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.

What comes next?

We're excited about V2 because it represents the next stage of our journey.

We have plenty to learn, more ideas to explore, and a lot of building ahead of us.

We also know that creating a useful product requires more than writing code. It requires feedback, iteration, and a willingness to rethink assumptions.

That's what we'll continue doing.

We're building Mindfries for people who believe engineering ability deserves to be evaluated more thoughtfully.

If you're an engineer, we'd love for you to explore our Practice section.

If you're a recruiter, hiring manager, or founder, we'd love for you to try the platform and share your perspective.

Early feedback can help shape what we build next.

V1 was the beginning. V2 is the next chapter.

Every startup reaches a point where the initial idea becomes something more concrete.

For us, building V1 was that moment.

It gave us a foundation, a way to test our thinking, and a clearer direction for the road ahead.

Now we're moving into V2 with a more ambitious goal: to keep pushing toward a better way to understand real engineering skills.

We're still early. We're still learning. And we're just getting started.

The next chapter of Mindfries is underway.
